Chapter 7: Dark Romanticism

"Old Roger Chillingworth, with a smile on his face, whispered something in the young clergyman’s ear. Hester Prynne looked at the man of skill, and even then, with her fate hanging in the balance, was startled to perceive what a change had come over his features,—how much uglier they were,—how his dark complexion seemed to have grown duskier, and his figure more misshapen,—since the days when she had familiarly known him."

This quotation shows Dark Romanticism of the outside reflecting inside. Looking at the Chillingworth's expression, Hester was startled by Chillingworth's ambition of taking revenge on another adulterer and the changes of his personality. "Dark complexion" and "his figure more misshapen" can reflect Chillingworth's evil mind of trying to take revenge on someone. Hester Prynne felt like Chillingworth had become a totally different person, whose mind is full of resentment and wickedness. Due to his changes of personality, Hester Prynne did not trust Chillingworth as well as she did before.

  1. This is a great example of how the outside reflected inside. However this might also be an example for how emotions had dominated reason. Hester have so much hater toward Chillingworth that even her perceptions of him had changed.

  2. I believe that you, Willy Lee, needs to put more of that literal "dark" side of romanticism. According to your explanation, it only covers Romanticism, however, what makes dark Romanticism different from the original idea of Romanticism. Some of their belief in supernatural events and focus on different things vary. I believe you can incorporate the evilness and analyze it more.

  3. I agree with what you wrote about outside reflecting inside. Also it is Dark Romantic because it's about human sin - how people are capable of committing evil deeds, and emotion over logic. Chillingworth was overcome by emotion and revenge.

  4. Sentence rewriting
Hester saw Chillingworth telling the young clerygman something with a smile, and she found him ugly because he's got a darker complexion and unpleasant shape of his face; this made Hester feel that she wasn't familiar with this man because he's changed so much.

  5. Old Roger Chillingworth whispered in the young clergyman's ear with a smile. Hester Prynne looked at the old ugly man and find out he is even more misshapen from the days she knew him.

  6. "Chillingworth smilingly whispered something in young Puritan's ear. And at this moment, Hester surprisingly noticed that Chillingworth's face has become darker and uglier. Comparing to his original personality, Chillingworth totally changed his personality, which freaked out Hester." So we can think in this way in order to get rid of aspect of dark romanticism. Even though Chillingworth's expression became darker and more evil, he still not decided to kill Hester just because she committed adulterer.
