"Old Roger Chillingworth presented a striking example of how a man who spends enough time doing the Devil’s work can actually transform himself into a Devil."
It shows that what's he's done has also showed in how he grew. As he grew older, he became what he is inside; his evil deeds has transformed him into a Devil. His years of torturing others has aged on him with the red light in his eyes and evil smile, just like that of a Devil.
I agree that this quotation has utilized the Dark Romantic Literature techniques. Nathaniel Hawthorne shows the sin of Chillingworth by stating "spends enough time doing the Devil’s work can actually transform himself into a Devil." Besides, the outside has reflect inside since what he did has led him become evil.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your analysis on this quotation. The analysis shows the aspect of the outside reflecting inside. Readers can feel Chillingworth became more evil by the time he wanted to eagerly take revenge on another adulterer. By looking at Chillingworth's appearance, we can see how story described him as a symbol of evil. And even Hester started losing her trust on Chillingworth; as a result of his personality was totally different from what she recognized before.
