Quotes Analysis (Chapter3~6)
“A wise sentence!” remarked the stranger, gravely bowing his head. “Thus she will be a living sermon against sin, until the ignominious letter be engraved upon her tombstone. It irks me, nevertheless, that the partner of her iniquity should not, at least, stand on the scaffold by her side. But he will be known!—he will be known!—he will be known!”
After comprehending the consequence of Hester Prynne's adultery, the stranger, also known as Roger Chillingworth, agreed with townsman's words by saying " a wise sentence." "She will be a living sermon" indicated that her punishment would be considered as a warning for those people, who would commit adultery or undermine the reverence of religion. "Until the ignominious letter be engraved upon her tombstone." referred Roger Chillingworth might kill Hester in order to conceal the truth that Roger also committed adultery. Roger sarcastically said "that the partner of her iniquity should not, at least, stand on the scaffold by her side." in order to relieve his guilt by saying what is right. Eventually, the repetition of "He will be known!" indicates Roger's action toward Hester will be known by public.
