The Scarlet Letter Ch. 1 pg. 45

"A throng of bearded men, in sad-colored garments and gray, steeple-crowned hats, intermixed with women, some wearing hoods, and others bare-headed, was assembled in front of a wooden edifice, the door of which was heavily timbered with oak and studded with iron spikes" (45).

  1. Symbolism - Sad-colored garments (possibly blue) may represent the people's internal feelings. The door of the prison symbolizes the barrier between freedom and incarceration. The door is studded with iron spikes, which might symbolize the fear people have for the door.

  2. Setting - Sad and grey garments indicate that the setting is in the past. The edifice with the door studded with spikes indicates that they are outside a prison. The way the people dress also indicates they are in a religious culture, since the clothes are bland. The culture also seems to be rural and poor, due to the beards and the lack of colorful clothes.

  3. Style - The style is descriptive and formal. It is descriptive because of its many adjectives. It is formal due to its high level of diction and its complex sentence structure.

  4. Text to life - People usually gather for celebration or mourning. It seems they are mourning because of the sad mood. It resembles a funeral or a execution.

  5. Text to self - From the setting and atmosphere, it reminds us of a funeral. Jingmin has been to funeral-type situations where the mood is very sad. Her family gathered when her grandmother was sick and discussed what to do.

  6. Mood - The mood is somber because of the diction (sad-colored, heavily, studded with iron spikes).
